Winter is almost over, and it’s time to get outside! The good news is that when you visit the Deep Creek Lake area in Garrett County, Md., not only can you spend a few days enjoying the great outdoors, but you can save money as well.

For those who love adventure, springtime in Garrett County offers the opportunity to enjoy more than 40 hiking and biking trails and 90,000 acres of public land. While Deep Creek Lake is the most well-known recreation area, other spots such as New Germany State Park and Sang Run State Park — two of the eight state parks in the county — offer even more opportunities to get outside.

Families can enjoy guided nature walks in Swallow Falls State Park and learn about the plants, animals, and environment on the way to the Middle Fork Wildland, while those looking for more hardcore adventure can follow the steep trails and switchbacks of the Fork Run Recreation Area. If you’re looking for awe-inspiring scenery, head to Savage River State Forest for a roughly mile-long hike on the High Rocks Trail to the top of Backbone Ridge for one of the best views of Garrett County.

Depending on the temperature, you may want to hit the water, and there are myriad opportunities to kayak, fish, swim, or even learn whitewater rafting with the help of a guide. And once you’ve worked up an appetite from all these activities, there are a wealth of dining choices from steakhouses to affordable family fare, to charming, casual cafes and diners to satisfy any type of taste.

Stop at the Pine Lodge Steakhouse for hand-cut steak, fresh seafood dinners, and of course, the creamy crab soup, or experience craft cocktails and fresh organic meals made with local ingredients at MoonShadow. Brenda’s Pizzeria offers New York-style pies made from scratch surrounded by views of Deep Creek Lake, and you can pick your own pasta every Wednesday night at Ace’s Run Restaurant and Pub.
