Just under two hours from Washington, D.C., lies a winter wonderland with some of the most spectacular winter fun ― Tucker County in West Virginia. Being just west of the Eastern Continental Divide, the skiing begins earlier, lasts longer, and is far more reliable snow than any other driving destination around. Of course, you can’t think winter sports without skiing and snowboarding popping into your mind first. The good news is that both of their premier ski resorts are just a mile or so apart, so you don’t need to worry about selecting a place to stay if you wish to try each, as they are so convenient to each other.
Timberline Mountain was purchased a few years ago, and the new owners have literally poured money into the place with too many improvements to list, most of which are snowmaking, new lifts, new facilities, new equipment, and more. We’ve always loved the terrain and the variety of difficulty to handle the beginner and the enthusiast. Check it out at timberlinemountain.com.
Canaan Valley Resort and Conference Center, one of West Virginia’s State Parks, offers a host of winter fun. They have an enormous lodge, a tubing park, ice skating rink, cross-country skiing, downhill skiing, sledding, snowshoeing, and more. In addition to the hotel, they offer cabin rentals, and we’ve found the four-bedroom cabin rentals perfect for our large family gatherings. For more information visit canaanresort.com.
Love cross-country skiing? Your just can’t beat it in Tucker County. White Grass, voted “Best in North America for Cross-Country Skiing” 25 to 30 kilometers of groomed trails help you explore the Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge, neighboring Blackwater Falls State Park, Dolly Sods Wilderness, and the Monongahela National Forest.
Winter at Blackwater Falls State Park is a blast! The park is home to the longest sled run on the East Coast. Each year, sledders race down more than a quarter-mile of fresh mountain snow surrounded by family and friends. More than 10 miles of trails also are available for cross-country skiing. The annual Cardboard and Duct Tape Race is a family favorite. For information visit their website wvstateparks.com/park/blackwater-falls-state-park.
There are a host of other fun in-town spots to visit in Davis, the charming hub of Tucker County or nearby Thomas. Enjoy the eateries and taverns, micro breweries, art galleries, and more. A favorite is the Snow Sports Museum in downtown Davis. Snow sports enthusiasts work hard and play hard. This attitude has spawned a plethora of stories and legends. Longtime West Virginia snow sports enthusiasts believe in the importance of preserving and documenting these amazing stories. For information, visit snowsportsmuseumwv.org.
We’ve personally been big fans of Canaan Realty, as they seem to have a large selection and know the area so well. Also note, just a mile or so down the street is Canaan Valley Resort State Park. In addition to skiing and snowboarding, Canaan offers ice skating and snow tubing. Some may like the slower, less challenging ski slopes there. They also offer lodging options ranging from the hotel to cottages with up to four bedrooms, and cabins too. Visit them at CanaanRealty.com or call (304) 866-4400.
