In my house we have two working parents and three energetic (adorable, but high maintenance) kids under the age of six. Needless to say we are busy. In order to unwind and create fun memories I try to plan several family vacations each year as well as a few long weekends away. Lately, we’ve found that when we return from these “vacations” to theme parks or the beach we are more exhausted than when we left! Even before we were told to socially distance ourselves from others, I knew what my family needed was to physically distance ourselves from traffic, noise and people. What we needed was a real vacation where we could slow down, enjoy nature, and enjoy each other distraction free.
We live just outside Washington D.C. so it was a fairly quick trip for us to get to Harman’s Luxury Log Cabins in the town of Cabins, West Virginia. Family owned and operated since 1939, Harman’s Cabins are located in the West Virginia Mountains near Seneca Rocks and Smoke Hole Caverns in the heart of the Spruce Knob Seneca Rocks National Recreation Area. Nestled in the foothills of the Dolly Sods Wilderness, Harman’s offers access to outdoor activities such as trout fishing, hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, canoeing, rock climbing, whitewater rafting, skiing, golfing, hunting and wildlife viewing. It took just over two hours, and while the drive itself was gorgeous, cabin 18 took my breath away. Our cabin was gorgeous, immaculately clean, well appointed and could not have been a better home base for our weekend in West Virginia.
Harman’s offers 2 miles of private access trophy trout stream, and there are cabins so close to the water you could literally cast your net while sitting in your hot tub. But we didn’t pack fishing poles; we packed a Frisbee. We brought board games, marshmallows for roasting, a guitar, a case of good beer, and our hiking shoes. Our infant son was strapped in a backpack/baby carrier, and the two other kids followed along while my husband and I led the way up the mountains for truly memorable hikes and Instagram-worthy vistas. Whether you are looking for an easy stroll along the stream or a more advanced day hike, there are dozens of options close by. In the evenings we enjoyed campfires, cooked our dinners on the charcoal grill, and then cozied up to enjoy the fireplace in our game room. We even got a few games of pool in!
We absolutely loved our stay. As an added bonus, the beds were so comfortable my husband commented that he had the best night of sleep since before we had kids — and that’s saying a lot!
I met Todd Harman, third-generation Harman and current owner who showed me where he plans to build a world-class fitness and wellness center in the fall of 2020. I imagined returning with my best girlfriends for a weekend of yoga by day and drinks in the hot tub at night.
We can’t wait to get back to Harman’s to relax, explore West Virginia, and reconnect as a family — just the five of us.
