For over 40 years, the Asam family’s Bavarian Inn in Shepherdstown, W.Va., has been hosting friends and neighbors for relaxing getaways in their 72-room inn. Luxurious features include gourmet meals such as wild game, fireplaces, whirlpool baths and an infinity pool. Perched on a spectacular bluff overlooking the Potomac River, this 11-acre European-inspired boutique resort offers comfort, elegance and world-class food and service. It looks like a German village straight out of the Black Forest. Try and get a room with the Potomac River view.
Recently, the historic inn has been undergoing a renaissance with the addition of their scenic Infinity 101 Pool and Bar, solar powered charging stations for electric cars, and the brand new and appropriately named Bavarian Brothers Brewery complete with a brewpub, lounge and outdoor beer garden. This latest addition serves the latest travel trends while incorporating even more of the Bavarian feel as well as family history. New for 2019, Bavarian Brothers Brewery makes high-quality microbrews with a brewpub that has a casual dining concept offering small bites, sandwiches and lighter options that reflect their European roots merged with West Virginia heritage via locally sourced ingredients and innovative design and presentation.
“About five years ago we began noticing a change in our guests needs. They were looking for more of an experience. We added the infinity pool and our guests loved it.” said Christian Asam. “Our average stay extended from one night to two or three and we saw our guests were treating us more as a vacation spot.” In addition, guests were interested in a more casual dining experience during their stay. Creating another casual dining experience and an area for people to meet, mingle and relax became a priority. Bavarian Brothers Brewing has been a huge success and injected a new energy and atmosphere to the inn. It has become a gathering spot for locals and hotel guests alike. The outdoor patio space and fire pit are particularly popular during warm weather months.
You can’t have a successful craft brewery without a top notch brewmaster, so they brought onboard brewmaster Harry Wright. He learned his craft in Pennsylvania at a craft brewery in York and through experimenting with his own home brewing. Nick Ledden, who assists Harry, also had a lot experience in home brewing and management experience at the Bavarian and WVU. Together, they make a great team and valued addition. “We have six recipes in the current mix and we will be adding new mixes and recipes over time,” Harry said. “However, the goal is to focus on quality over quantity. We use top-quality ingredients and we are not sparing any expense to make our beers.”
So if you are looking for an easy one- to two-hour drive that takes you a world away, check out the new microbrewery and features at the Bavarian Inn. Book a few nights and make it that special getaway that involves relaxation, comfort, pampering, great views, superb dining options and more.
