These 10 wineries just a start in Fauquier County

Northern Virginia is certainly known for its wine trails and Fauquier County, Va., is no exception. Boasting over 20 wineries, Fauquier County is home to award-winning wines and gorgeous views.

We’ve rounded up a preview of 10 area vineyards and wineries, but be sure to check out information on all of the area’s wineries at

Granite Heights Winery, Warrenton

What started out as a hobby in 2001 has grown to an award-winning, state-of-the-art winery. Granite Heights Winery specializes in small-batch wines and offers “sit down” tastings in their 19th century farmhouse situated on a 168 acre farm.

Morais Vineyard and Wineries, Bealeton

Morais Vineyard and Wineries fuse Virginia’s rich history of winemaking with a family legacy of creating wines beginning in Portugal. Take in beautiful views of the vineyard from the tasting room. Enjoy an intimate wine tasting with friends or hold a large event — the ballroom can accommodate up to 500 guests.

Molon Lave Vineyards, Warrenton

Transport yourself to the Mediterranean once you step foot in Molon Lave Vineyards’ European-inspired tasting room. This boutique farm winery fuses Virginia-grown grapes with traditional European winemaking techniques for a truly unique experience. The wraparound patio and outdoor fireplace are the perfect place to gather and take in the serene surroundings.

Pearmund Cellars

Pearmund Cellars, Broad Run

Pearmund Cellars was established in 1976 but the farm on which the vineyard sits dates back to the 1740s. Today, they solely grow chardonnay grapes as those have been the most successfully cultivated at the vineyard. Enjoy a glass of wine at this award-winning winery in the tasting room or have a romantic, candlelit dinner catered in the intimate Barrel Room.

Mediterranean Cellars, Warrenton

Louis Papadopoulos, the owner and winemaker at Mediterranean Cellars, comes from a long heritage of winemaking. After his first visit to Virginia, he recognized the red clay soil as being very similar to the soil of his home in the Attiki region of Greece. Mediterranean Cellars offers exceptional wines made with both American and European winemaking techniques.

Aspen Dale Winery at the Barn, Delaplane

Aspen Dale

Located in Northern Fauquier County, Aspen Dale Winery combines wine with history at their 200 year-old barn winery. Colonial and European winemaking techniques are used to create complex wines at this boutique winery. Enjoy the peaceful scenery while you enjoy wine and small bites.

Blue Valley Vineyard and Winery, Delaplane

Making wine has been a Zissios family tradition that began in one of the oldest wine-making regions in the world, Greece. They’ve brought that tradition to Northern Virginia and produce several varieties of wine including Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Muscat and more. There’s plenty to do beyond just tasting the award-winning wines at Blue Valley Vineyard and Winery. Be sure to check out their calendar of events for upcoming activities online.

Desert Rose Ranch & Winery, Hume

Expect to find more than wine at Desert Rose Ranch & Winery. Along with beautiful country scenery and a pet-friendly winery, Desert Rose Ranch & Winery is home to a breeding and training facility of purebred and part bred Arabian horses. A variety of tastings are available around the Horseshoe bar.

Pearmund Cellars

Linden Vineyards, Linden

Located in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains, Linden Vineyards is best known for their single bottlings of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Bordeaux variety red blends. Linden Vinyards’ grapes come from three distinct vineyard sites: Hardscrabble Vineyard, which includes some of the original grape vines planted in 1985; Avenius Vineyard, located about a mile from the winery building; and Boisseau Vineyard, a warmer, west-facing site located about six miles away in Front Royal, Va.

Philip Carter Winery, Hume

While Virginia boasts a distinguished past in wine making, none can claim the history that Philip Carter Winery can. The Carter family lays claim to a 250 year legacy as maker of the first recognized fine wine in America. Picnic and Winery Tour packages are available for purchase and include a guided tour of the vineyard and wine making process, a private tasting and picnic basket to be enjoyed at the vineyard.

This list just scratches the surface of the 27 wineries included on the Fauquier County Wine Trail.
