Downtown winter Jim Thorpe

Autumn and winter are two favorite times to visit Pennsylvania’s Pocono mountains region. In the fall, bright colors and chilly temperatures make for the perfect time to hike and try the area’s other outdoor activities. Once the season becomes even colder and snow begins to fall, the region boasts family activities, skiing, and more.

Here are five things to try this season in the northeast region of Pennsylvania:

Snowtubing Blue Mountain

1. Go snow tubing

Snow tubing isn’t just for the kids — it’s fun for the whole family! In the Poconos, snow tubing is offered at Blue Mountain, Camelback, Shawnee Mountain, Jack Frost Big Boulder, Ski Big Bear, and White Lighting Tubing at Fernwood.

According to the Pocono Mountains Visitors Bureau, most facilities offer tubes for single riders and some feature family-size snow tubes.

2. Learn to ski

Rates start at $158 per person.

3. Go horseback riding

“Feel the winter air on your face and enjoy the natural scenery of the Pocono Mountains as you ride horseback in our beautiful region,” the visitors bureau says on its website.

Horseback rides are offered throughout the region at Daisy Field Farm, Manor Sports, Malibu Dude Ranch, Deer Path Riding Stables, or Fernwood’s Winter Fun Center.

4. Explore Jim Thorpe

This community, known for its Victorian charm, boasts “quaint shops, unique restaurants, and picturesque sights.”

The town’s Olde Time Christmas celebration is held over three weekends, Dec. 1–2, 8 –9, and 15–16. The celebration includes train rides with Santa, strolling carolers, holiday shopping, and more.

5. Book a romantic getaway

The Poconos are one of the most sought-after destinations for couples, with unique lodging experiences and cozy cabins available for rent. Book your stay, leave the kids with their grandparents, and light the fireplace for a cozy retreat in the heart the mountainous region.

Cove Haven Resorts are popular Poconos destinations, with packages including luxurious suites, unlimited breakfast and dinner, and live nightly entertainment, plus indoor and outdoor recreational facilities and activities. Book your stay at covepoconoresorts.com.
