Maryland is a great state filled with variety: mountains, oceans, rural farmland, wilderness, and vibrant towns.
Yet, with all the variety, there is only one lake in the state you can powerboat on, as well as only one ski slope.
These make Deep Creek Lake, located in McHenry, Md., a four-season vacation mecca.
Situated at the edge of the lake and alongside the ski slope is Wisp Resort, a true gem, as well as a destination in and of itself. Consider taking your summer vacation getaway there.
Golf in the summer
While winter is for skiing, summer offers other activities to enjoy at Wisp. Try a golf getaway to the Lodestone Golf Course. Ranked the No. 2 course in Maryland by Golf Week magazine in 2018, it’s the highest elevated course in Maryland. (Fun fact: Wisp’s sister resort, Wintergreen Resort, is home to Virginia’s highest golf course.)
Take advantage of Super Wednesdays and golf 18 holes for just $74 spring or fall, and just $79 during the summer.
The ever-popular “Stay & Play Packages” start at $124 per person, per night. Golfers can’t find a better deal given the value of the course, the luxurious hotel, and the unbeatable scenery.
Ladies and juniors pay half price to golf on Sunday afternoons. And, families with interests other than golf will have little trouble finding a host of activities at the hotel, in town, or on the lake while the golfer or golfers in the family pursue their joy.
Wisp Escape Games
You may think Wisp is all about outdoor fun, however, the resort has something to offer in the great indoors—Wisp Escape Games.
Escape games are reality games where players are tasked with trying to “escape” from a room in a set amount of time using teamwork and problem-solving to complete puzzles with clues, hints, and strategy to aid in their escape. Here, math and science skills take a back seat to more important communication skills. You have to work together and it’s fun.
Opened in late summer 2017, Wisp Escape Games launched with “Race to the Slopes.” It was met with such overwhelming enthusiasm that a second game, “Detention Breakout,” was opened in May.
Water, water, everywhere
While Deep Creek Lake clearly presents a major watery draw to the area, it’s not the only one.
Check out the Adventure Sports Center International’s re-circulating whitewater course. Guided whitewater rafting on the course begins at just $49 per person.
Seeking something more sedate? Try paddle-boarding and kayaking at Deep Creek Lake State Park. It is available with or without instruction. Pontoon boat tours offer a scenic view of the lake you just can’t get elsewhere.
Other activities
Try Wisp’s Aerial Adventures and get your head in the clouds on one of three canopy tour zip lines: Flying Squirrel Canopy Tour, Spider Monkey Adventure, and the Chipmunk Challenge Course.
Closer to the ground, try the many mountain adventures, including the famous Mountain Coaster. Learn how to drive a Segway on a Segway tour. Take a peaceful, scenic chairlift ride, go hiking, try your hand at archery, play disc golf, or go mountain biking. It’s all there and your week will not lack for things to do, rain or shine.
