When you’re planning your route to hit the slopes this year, make sure that Wintergreen Resort in Nelson County, Va., is one of your first stops. The resort, which has 130 skiable acres on 24 slopes, is just an hour and a half drive from Washington, D.C.

Santa arrived early at the resort this year, delivering 1,800 new pieces of rental equipment, including 1,100 new skis and 300 new snowboards and helmets.

This season, the resort also welcomed new shops and gathering places, like the Terrace Cafe, which serves breakfast, lunch and coffee; the Blue Ridge Boutique, offering an eclectic selection of fashion apparel; Outdoor Elements, that carries everything gear junkies are looking for, from winter weather gear to ski accessories; and the Mountain Inn, where you’ll find comfortable seating, tables and a fireplace to warm up next to.

Here are a few ways to experience everything Wintergreen has to offer:

Après-ski activities

The Edge, at the resort, offers après-ski music and specials, plus local, fresh, all-natural beef which makes for the best burgers in the region, according to Betsy Dunkerton, Wintergreen’s marketing director.

Also on-site, Checkerberry Cabin continues the popular blues, barbecue and tacos. Pryor’s is launching new healthful options with hand-crafted wraps, salads, quinoa and more.

And, The Copper Mine Bistro is expanding the weekend breakfast buffet. “It’s the best way to fuel your day. Friday dinner is Prime Rib night — arrive hungry, leave happy!” Dunkerton said.

Activities beyond the slopes

For fun off of the slopes, Dunkerton recommends Virginia’s largest tubing park, The Plunge. Plus, visit Ridgely’s Fun Park for kids, the Aquatics & Fitness Center, The Spa, Discovery Ridge Adventure Center and more. Whether you love hiking, dining, golfing or just hanging out with the kids, you’ll find something to do.

Best Runs

For the advanced skier or rider, Tyro is a favorite run, Dunkerton said. “It’s the longest trail and offers varied terrain, starting out with a gentle downhill, and ending with an exciting finish.”

For the expert skier and rider, Cliffhanger is the favorite, hands down.

Don’t forget, there’s no need to head home after a long day on the slopes. Wintergreen Resort offers accommodations from studios to nine-bedroom homes.

“Renting through Wintergreen gives you exclusive benefits — 8 a.m. skiing and riding, access to Aquatics & Fitness and more,” Dunkerton said.
