The On the Rocks Waterfront Grill, with locations at both the Lewes, Del., and Cape May, N.J., ferry terminals, is a favorite spot for outdoor eating on the Delaware Bay. With happy hour specials, award-winning in-house chefs, and spectacular views of the ferries, the casual outdoor setting is open every day of the week, May through October. The outdoor grill is a unique spot to dine and savor a craft brew or mixed drink, or taste test the competing Delaware Dock and Jersey Shore burgers.

Flip-flops are encouraged for those who like to kick back and have great food without having to dress up or plan too far ahead. In fact, no reservations are accepted. Parking is always available and free, as are the spectacular sunsets.

A new menu includes something for everyone, including grilled wings, assorted salads, and seafood specialties. Kids’ menus include chicken tenders and hot dogs at the right price and portion size for smaller family members. The free mini-golf course within easy sight is a great way to keep younger ones entertained while parents indulge in relaxing sunsets and adult beverage specials nearby.

The view is unparalleled, allowing diners to watch the ferries come in and out. Throughout August, the view improves with Delaware’s stately tall ship the Kalymar Nyckel docked at the finger pier in Lewes.

On the Rocks is also a growing favorite for business meetings, special events, and weddings on the boardwalk. Both large and small events can be accommodated with catering menus tailored to event needs.

Whether getting ready to take a ferry ride, or just lazing by the dock for some sit-down sunning, it’s a welcome break from the ordinary. (
